The Color Brown.
The color brown grounds me, connecting me to the richness of nature. I see the world through the lens of brown eyes, as a brown skin girl. The color brown is home.
Brown is solid. Pure. Soothing. Reliable. Honest.
The color brown withholds a protective and nurturing energy, and I automatically think of a tree’s brown bark, the stimulating sights of natural wood, and the aromas of Palo Santo.
In my home, it’s necessary and comforting to see wooden furniture and exposed wooden floors. The natural element of wood is not only visually satisfying, it’s reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. I become mesmerized by the rift grain patterns on pieces of wood as the lines swirl and loop into consecutive rings, serving as a reminder for me to continue to flow naturally.
As I see it, designing on wood is my way of collaborating with nature to develop new layers of functional art. The shades of brown wood left exposed in my art creations serve as a way to acknowledge that my art would not be what it is without this natural resource. I am finding balance between being deeply rooted and freely expressing my energy through colors.
In the spirit of focusing on all things brown, as I continue on my journey, I’ll be doing some of my favorite things: drinking coffee, eating chocolate, going on nature walks, and collecting new pieces of wood to create your next favorite piece of “brown-inspired” original art. Does anyone need a console table?
What does the color brown mean to you?
