The Color Red
The Color Red.
Red can be such a beautiful color. It’s not within my top five favorites, but I appreciate it when necessary. When considering chakra colors, the root chakra is associated with red, symbolizing a space of grounding and owning your power. In this case, red is encouraging.
There are times when I experience the color red and it triggers discomfort within because it’s startling. I have a preference for colors that ease their way into my purview, or create a perfect balance of everything in sight.
Red is powerful and it can be overbearing, but when we want to get someone’s attention with urgency, we do not hesitate to use this color.
Men and women sometimes wear red with the intention to attract a mate. Animals do this as well. Have you heard of the frigatebird? Click here.
Red is flashy, and extremely hard to miss.
I read a magazine article recently, about a designer who decided to paint her client’s living room crimson red, because she noticed that the client wore red-framed glasses. Accents of red are one thing, but an entire room painted red is a bit extreme in my opinion. The walls were red, the furniture included pops of red. It was a lot. The energy of that space would place my nervous system high-alert. I find artwork with some pops of red in a space with white walls to be more tasteful.
My dear friend’s favorite color is red. I designed a desk for her recently (photo’d below), and she was certain to let me know she wanted the table to be red, black, and white. I don’t paint with red too often these days, so I had to actually go to the art store and buy red paint because I didn’t have it in my stash. When I do use red in my art, it’s very minimal - and to be honest, I used it more often when I first started painting 10 years ago (photo’d above), than I have within the last couple of years.
I appreciate the powerful energy that is associated with the color red, and I’m grateful to know that it’s there when needed.
